STRATEGY 9: MAKE HASTE TO NOT WASTE

According to a research study conducted by the Discovery Channel and distributed on DiscoveryNews.com, almost 30 percent of all of the food produced ends up in the trash—wasted (only about 14 percent of what we bring home is wasted). The waste is as a result of several things: simply buying too much; serving portions that are too large and go uneaten; the undesirability of eating leftovers; and attempting to store food either improperly or for too long (yes, we’ve had those fuzzy green “science experiments” in our refrigerator on occasion). Another cause of wasted food comes from farmers who may overproduce vegetables due to better farming methods, but aren’t able to sell all that they have produced. All of these factors contribute to wasted food, wasted water to grow the food, and wasted fossil fuels used to harvest the food and refrigerate it at home. If we can learn to buy more carefully, store what we buy, and use what we store, we can actually save money and help the environment at the same time.
